Description
On 10 October 2015, 103 people were killed in an attack on the peace rally at the crossroads of Ankara station in the Ulus district of the Altındağ district in Ankara.
Current legal situation
The charge of the attack was accepted on 13 July 2016. Investigations against 36 people revealed that the order for the attack came from Ilhami Bali (the person responsible for the IS in Turkey). Of these 36 persons, 19 are under arrest and 17 are on the run.
During the trial it was established that the same people who organised the Suruç attack, which killed 33 people, were also responsible for this bombing. For 14 defendants, including Balı, life imprisonment under aggravated conditions for negligent and intentional killing was demanded.
The first hearing of the case, one year after the massacre; it began on 7 November 2016 in the 4th Ankara Supreme Criminal Court. 397 people injured and affected by this attack are joint plaintiffs. The trial, which lasted about two years and involved more than fifty hearings, was concluded in August 2018. During the three-day court hearings in Ankara Sincan prison, the victims’ lawyers demanded that the case be extended to civil servants and that the attack be assessed as a “crime against humanity”. They also demanded that all links of the defendants to the IS be clearly disclosed. However, the court ignored these requests.
In deciding the case, in which no official was brought to justice, the court‘s delegation sentenced nine defendants once to “increased life sentences“ for “violation of the constitutional order” and 100 times for “intentional murder”. The other defendants were sentenced to between 7 and 12 years. Lawyers opposed the decision.
